The main application of them are mineral exploration (Base metals, coal, iron etc), environmental monitoring (nuclear waste, etc), mining (), geotechnical engineering (allocation of voids, faults) and water investigation (detection of water bearing zones. Alluvial locations).


ABOUT THE GROUND GEOPHYSICS

Surface geophysical methods allow subsurface features to be located, mapped, and characterized by making measurements at the surface that respond to a physical, electrical, or chemical property. These noninvasive measurements can be effectively used to provide reconnaissance to detailed geologic information, guide subsurface sampling and excavation, and provide continuous monitoring. The ground geophysical methods provide data at a variety of scales, from the regional geologic setting to site-specific geotechnical investigation.
The ground geophysics methods use the investigational passive and active methods to study the nature of the subsurface formations. The geophysicists use measurements of physical quantities made at or above the ground surface or, more rarely, in boreholes to draw conclusions about consealed geology. In the geophysical technique to be useful in mineral exploration, there must be contrasts in the physical properties of the rocks concerned that are related, directly or indirectly, to the presence of economically significant minerals. The geophysical anomalies, defined as differences from a constant or slowly varying background, may then be recorded. Anomalies may take many different forms and need not necessarily be centered over their source. Ideally, they will be produced by actual economic minerals, but even the existence of a strong physical contrast between ore minerals and the surrounding rocks does not guarantee a significant anomaly. Ground geophysical methods can be classified as either passive (involving measurements of naturally existing fields) or active, if the response of the ground to some stimulus is observed. Passive methods include measurements of magnetic and gravity fields, naturally occurring alpha and gamma radiation, and natural electrical fields. All other electrical and electromagnetic techniques, seismic methods, and some borehole methods that use artificial radioactive sources are active.
